Educational Philosophy
I believe that every child
deserves and equal opportunity to learn and be given a quality education. All
children are capable to attain greatness. As teachers we need to show them that
anything is possible. The purpose of school is to build a solid foundation for
children to stand on and be able to express themselves. Also school is to prepare
them to thrive in today’s adult society.
There are many qualities a
teacher must have to be effective. A teacher must be patient and kind. Dealing
with students who have different personalities and backgrounds can become
overwhelming. A teacher must take the time to learn each student’s strong and
weak points in order for them to succeed. A teacher must be nurturing and
loving. Teachers are with their students for the majority of the day and in some
cases, teachers see their students more than their own parents do. For some
students, school is their getaway, or a home away from home. Children need to
know that they have someone in their corner at all times. Also a teacher must
be able to give tough love. Children need guidance and to learn the difference
between right and wrong. They need to be kept on the right path. When children
are in the wrong they must be corrected but in the proper way to ensure that
they learn from their mistakes. As a teacher, it is our job to
keep students motivated and interested. Students should be rewarded when they
achieve. They should have something to work for, whether it be a treat from the
treasure box, lunch with the teacher, or even a homework pass. Rewards are a
good motivation for students to keep them striving for excellence. As a
teacher, I would set my expectations at a high level, so the students will aim
high giving them confidence and an “I can do anything” attitude. Also instead
of doing the usual same old lecturing and taking notes, I would have my
students learn in groups and have them teach each other the lesson. It’s good
to switch things up a bit.
The most effective way to
assess student learning would be to give quizzes but in a fun way. I would play
the game around the world with my students to check for understanding. The game
starts off by two students standing up and the teacher asks a question. The
student who answers correctly and the fastest moves to the next student and so
on so forth hence the name around the world. This would keep my students on
their toes and is a great way to see if they comprehend what I would be
teaching in the class. Another classroom activity I would use is Kahoot.it.I learned about this website in my EME2040 class at Broward College. Kahoot is a collection of questions on a specific topic. On a cellphone or on a computer a whole class can participate in this game. After questions on the specific topic are formed students go to www.Kahoot.it to create a username. Once a username is created it is shown from the projector for the computer and onto the board. The questions then begin to be shown on the board and either from your computer or phone you pick the right answer. The faster you pick the right answer, the more points you get. Kahoot keeps the kids motivated and interested in learning. It is truly a fun experience for students!
